Thalassotherapy, or Ocean-therapy has been utilized by cultures that have lived near the ocean for over 5000 years. The word Thalassotherapy comes from the Greek words for thalasso (sea water or sea goddess) and therapeia (to heal) and was coined during the mid 1860’s in France. It was common, at that time, to find Royal families along side the ‘rich & famous’ of the day, to go & relax while absorbing the healing benefits of warmed ocean water & raw seaweed in a bath. This was the beginning of the modern era of Thalassotherapy, prior, it was utilized in Ancient Egypt for more than 3,000 years. The famous ancient Greek healers also extolled the benefits of the ocean. Herodotus (484 B.C.E,) said: ‘Sun & sea cure are sovereign remedies for most diseases and particularly for women’s ailments’. Euripides (420 B.C.E, ) said: ‘The sea cures men’s diseases’ & Hippocrates (350 B.C.E) the father of modern medicine, said, ‘Go to the ocean to heal’. Around the world today, you will find doctors living in the coastal regions of France, Portugal & Spain still prescribing these ancient remedies for many conditions including arthritis. Going to the ocean to heal, something old is now something new again!
